Marcel Schwittlick, “cursor”
RRose Editions, 2024
The process behind “cursor” is both generative and hand-drawn. For more than ten years, while spending time on computers, Marcel Schwittlick has recorded mouse movements, gathering a trove of what could be seen as involuntary drawings. Among this initial library, the artist has chosen 31 arrangements, according to their high entropy properties – i.e. how surprising the lines are. These “cursor” lines have then been translated into HP-GL, a plotter control language designed to describe any drawing as a series of instructions. Each of the 32 “Cursor” pages in this book are matched by their HP-GL counterparts, a written, poetical form of the graphical movement.
